How Extraordinary Claims Mutate as They Travel Online

An unfinished database became a 72-hour “truth dump”. Experiments became suppressed free energy. Separate objects became one lost city. Then a death created the causal link the evidence never did.

Content note: This article discusses a death ruled suicide and the online speculation that followed. It does not describe the method.

The online version of Joe Felz’s final months is astonishingly coherent.

He discovered forbidden ancient technology, proved free energy, located a lost city, decoded books that would rewrite religion and Palestine, announced that he was three days from releasing everything, warned that he was being watched—and was then silenced.

The problem is that the coherence arrived after the events.

So I traced the joins.

The important distinction: mutation is not always deliberate lying

An extraordinary claim can mutate without a single mastermind. One person misremembers a date. Another removes a question mark. A third combines two clips. A headline supplies motive. An AI summary repeats the headline as background fact. Hundreds of sincere sharers inherit a story none of them individually invented.

This article is not an attempt to decide what every poster privately believed. It reconstructs how the propositions changed and what evidence travelled with them.

Joe really did leave behind a large, unusual body of work

The mythology did not grow from nothing. As the flagship investigation shows, Joe Felz was genuinely pursuing several ambitious projects:

• ordinary off-grid solar and electrical education;
• a proposed water-and-gravity generator;
• wireless high-voltage and resonant-energy experiments;
• solar-powered microwave plastic pyrolysis with Julian Brown;
• unusual artefacts, X-rays, glowing-object demonstrations and alleged dates;
• an excavation and a developing lost-city/tunnel hypothesis;
• scanning old religious, esoteric and historical books into a searchable database.

Those projects overlapped through Joe, but they did not all share one source, one site, one proof standard or one release date. The viral story made them mutually corroborating: the books explained the artefacts, the artefacts proved the energy, the helicopters proved suppression, and the death proved all of it.

Mutation 1: “the database is close” becomes a 72-hour deadline

Joe posted a 98-second video titled “Database is close, FREE BIBLES ON THE WAY”. The post survives, and the underlying FelzBooks project survives. A functioning beta with books and searchable text is much stronger evidence of activity than a vague plan.

What I could not recover is Joe saying that a complete global archive would be released exactly 72 hours after his death, or that he was three days from publishing a cache that would rewrite world history.

The 72-hour claim appears as settled fact in post-death articles. USA Herald wrote that Joe died “just 72 hours” before a massive release. The People’s Voice put the deadline directly in its headline. Neither article links to a dated Joe announcement stating that deadline.

A vague phrase becoming an exact countdown is a classic mutation because precision feels like documentation. The number looks sourced even when it is the least sourced part of the sentence.

Mutation 2: old and obscure becomes forbidden and suppressed

Joe collected and scanned old Bibles, Masonic works and other historical books. Some contained apocryphal or deuterocanonical texts absent from standard modern Protestant editions. Some editions were rare as physical objects.

The retelling changed availability into suppression:

• not included in one modern canon → removed by “the Church”;
• rare edition → forbidden book;
• difficult to search → hidden knowledge;
• digitisation project → recovery of erased history;
• historical map → map that rewrites the modern Israel–Palestine conflict.

Those are not equivalent statements. The companion investigation explains what “left out of the Bible” can actually mean. Many works invoked in this story are available through libraries, archive sites, scholarly editions or traditions whose canons still include them. Digitising them can be useful without proving an active censorship campaign.

Mutation 3: experiment becomes proof, then suppression

Joe’s energy work contained a mixture of established and extraordinary elements. He demonstrably built ordinary solar systems and mobile battery infrastructure. He filmed real wireless-energy apparatus. He powered a real microwave-pyrolysis machine. He also described a “perpetual” water-and-gravity generator for which no closed energy-balance test has been recovered.

The mutation chain was:

• working hardware → validated performance;
• validated mechanism → energy created without a source;
• unconventional project → technology threatening an industry;
• limited public data → information being suppressed;
• death → inventor was silenced.

The first step in each branch is often true. That is what makes the chain persuasive. Wireless electricity is real. Microwave pyrolysis is real. Water falling through head can make electricity. None of those mechanisms independently establishes over-unity output, suppression or motive.

Mutation 4: separate object histories become one discovery

The Joe-era objects entered the story through several routes: a Central American garage; excavation footage; Tula-linked collaborators and a proposed museum; glowing and X-rayed objects; an alleged clock; and a figure found beneath claimed stone layers.

Later montages place them side by side. The visual grammar implies one collection from one site. Captions then treat the strongest claim attached to any object as a property of all of them: the age from one clip, the X-ray from another, the glow from another, the excavation from another and the lost-city interpretation from another.

This is why provenance matters more than a spectacular montage. A person at the centre of several chains does not make the chains identical.

Mutation 5: “A Lost City?” loses its question mark

Joe’s own lost-city video was framed as a question. His chronology shows a developing hypothesis involving symbols, excavation, a proposed tunnel and comparison with LiDAR discoveries. No professional site plan, ground-truthed remote-sensing report or dated excavation has been recovered.

After his death, “investigating a possible lost city” became “discovered a lost city”. This tiny grammatical change performs enormous evidential work. It upgrades the destination while leaving every intermediate test untouched.

The full archaeological companion asks what lost-city evidence actually looks like. Joe’s surviving record is best described as a research lead that did not reach those later stages before his death.

The causal splice: “then he died”

A chronology can be accurate while the causal story is false. “Person worked on X and later died” does not show “person died because of X”.

Joe had made public comments about threats, surveillance and not being suicidal, and he posted footage interpreted as unusual aircraft activity. Those materials became highly salient after his death. They deserve contextual authentication: original dates, full clips, the event being discussed and whether a specific, corroborated threat was reported. A pre-existing warning is evidence that the person made a warning. It is not a substitute for forensic evidence about a later death.

The Paulding County Coroner’s Office confirmed to People that Joe’s death was ruled suicide. His partner asked the public to stop spreading “false narratives, assumptions, and speculation” while a real family was grieving. No credible evidence recovered in this investigation establishes homicide or a causal link to his books, artefacts or energy projects.

Records update, 29 August 2026: a records requester has since published images described as a redacted Paulding County death-investigation report, narrowing the reported discovery to the morning of 1 August in Dallas, Georgia and recording the same manner classification. A separate published GBI open-records response says the requested forensic reports and scientific testing were still incomplete and unavailable. Those facts prevent two opposite errors: an incomplete public file is not proof of homicide, and a reported classification is not the same thing as a complete independently reviewed case file.

The People’s Voice nevertheless wrote that the timing and official ruling were part of a coordinated silencing, and even reframed the family’s request for restraint as possible “damage control”. That is a sealed narrative: a denial becomes further evidence of the thing denied.

The most revealing primary source is a retraction

Samuel Adam Porter later published a remarkable public correction. He said that, when news of Joe’s death first appeared with little information, he jumped to the worst conclusion. His post reached more than a million people, fed suspicion and accusations against Joe’s partner, and contributed to an environment that produced attacks and death threats.

He wrote: “Suspicion is not the same as evidence.” He said he was wrong, apologised and announced that he was deleting or editing the earlier posts.

That does not make Porter uniquely culpable. It makes his record unusually valuable. Most mutation chains never provide a witness at their centre willing to describe the acceleration from missing information to confident allegation.

It also exposes the asymmetry. The original story had already been screenshotted, paraphrased and detached from him. Editing the source cannot edit every copy, article, AI summary and memory downstream.

Why the correction cannot simply reverse the spread

A large 2018 Science study of verified true and false news on Twitter found that falsehoods travelled farther, faster, deeper and more broadly in its dataset. Novelty and emotional reaction were associated with the difference; bots accelerated both true and false news, while human sharing helped produce the gap.

Joe’s post-death story contains exactly the features that travel well:

• a beloved, charismatic central figure;
• a sudden loss and an information vacuum;
• several genuinely unusual projects;
• visible warnings that gain new meaning retrospectively;
• a precise countdown;
• powerful villains;
• a moral instruction to “keep digging”;
• a family request that can be reframed as concealment.

Corrections help, but research on the continued-influence effect shows that retracted information can continue shaping reasoning. Removing a claim also leaves a hole in the story. A good correction therefore needs an alternative account: the database was real but in beta; the release date was not verified; the projects were separate; the official ruling exists; and ambiguity is not proof of a hidden cause.

Source laundering: when five copies look like five confirmations

A claim may appear in a Facebook post, a video narration, two websites and an AI-generated answer. If all five descend from the same unsourced caption, there is still only one source—and possibly no primary evidence at all.

The Joe story demonstrates several laundering signals:

• articles repeat the exact “72 hours” wording but do not link the announcement;
• “officials” or a named agency are invoked without a document or direct statement;
• a later article cites another later article instead of Joe’s original post;
• an embedded social clip supplies atmosphere but not the proposition in the headline;
• precise numbers travel while the sample, measurement or date disappears;
• AI summaries combine adjacent search results into one fluent biography.

The cure is source genealogy: for each proposition, walk backward until you reach the first recoverable record. Count independent origins, not links.

The mutation audit

1. Write the smallest exact claim. Do not investigate “the conspiracy”; investigate “Joe announced a release in 72 hours”.
2. Find the earliest source. Save the original file, date, caption and full context.
3. Separate attribution from truth. Proving Joe said something does not prove the thing he said.
4. Map each transformation. Note added dates, certainty, motive, identity and causal words.
5. Test independence. Five repetitions from one post are one evidence stream.
6. Restore question marks and future tense. “Planned”, “believed”, “testing” and “possible” carry historical information.
7. Search for disconfirming primary records. Retractions, family statements, laboratory reports and official findings matter.
8. Do not turn absence into agency. A missing file may be lost, private, never created or suppressed; the absence alone cannot choose.
9. Assess harm before amplification. Naming alleged perpetrators without evidence can move an online fantasy into a family’s real life.
10. Publish an update path. State what new evidence would change the conclusion.

The conclusion

The careful version of Joe’s story is less tidy and more interesting. He was a capable practical builder, gifted media operator and relentless synthesiser who moved rapidly among real technologies, spiritual interpretations and extraordinary hypotheses. Some work was demonstrably real. Some conclusions outran the available evidence. Much of it was unfinished.

The viral version does not preserve that complexity. It uses his death as adhesive.

Tracing the mutation is not disrespecting Joe. It is refusing to make his family, his experiments and his unfinished questions carry claims that the surviving record cannot support.
